VCN – Deputy Director General of the General Department of Vietnam Customs (GDVC) Mai Xuan Thanh had a meeting with Ambassador of Belgium to Vietnam H.E Karl Van de Bossche and Customs Counselor at the Embassy of Belgium in Indonesia and Vietnam Eddy De Cuyper, on November 18.

At the meeting, Deputy Director General Mai Xuan Thanh said that cooperation between Vietnam Customs and Belgium Customs mainly takes place in multilateral frameworks such as WCO, APEC and EU.

In which, the two sides mainly cooperate in exchanging information related to fighting against smuggling and trade fraud, and verifying suspicious information related to origin fraud.

Deputy Director General Mai Xuan Thanh emphasized that currently, Vietnam Customs is accelerating the digital transformation process to realize the goal of Digital Government, accordingly, Vietnam Customs is building a smart customs model to meet the requirements of trade development, in which the EU is an important partner of Vietnam,

Therefore, with the practical experience of the Kingdom of Belgium and the EU in building smart customs, Vietnam Customs expects and proposes to the Belgian Customs to share experiences and methods.

Deputy Director General Mai Xuan Thanh also wishes the Ambassador and Customs Counselor to create favorable conditions for the two agencies to have closer cooperation and hopes that the two sides will connect and encourage investors and traders to participate in the supply chain of goods between the two parties.

To implement the EVFTA as well as promote effective bilateral customs cooperation, Vietnam Customs proposes that the two sides consider negotiating to sign a memorandum of understanding on the basis of the EVFTA.

However, along with the trade development, the crime of smuggling and trade fraud has also increased, so it is necessary for the participation of two agencies in controlling and preventing smuggling and illegal transportation of goods, especially cooperation in combating crime in the field of customs, said Deputy Director General Mai Xuan Thanh.

At the meeting, Mr. H.E Karl Van de Bossche and Mr. Eddy De Cuyper expressed their expectation that the bilateral cooperation between the two agencies will continue to develop in the future.

Accordingly, at the proposal of Vietnam Customs, the Belgian Customs side is willing to share, cooperate and exchange experiences to help Vietnam Customs build a customs model in a modern and professional manner as well as willing to cooperate in exchanging information and updating the development of each country’s customs administration; updating changes in customs policies and procedures of each country; exchanging information for investigation and verification of violations of the customs law; updating customs violations for goods or passengers on entry and exit; and warning of violations when goods from Belgium are exported to Vietnam.
