Find solutions to attract goods through the first specialized container port in Vietnam

The VICT port is the first specialized container port in Vietnam. How has the port been performing recently, sir?

Operated by the Joint Venture Development Corporation No. 1 based on the Law on Foreign Investment in Vietnam, VICT port is the first dedicated container port project in Vietnam, established in 1994 and put into operation since late 1998. Over the years, VICT port has focused on specialized handling of container vessels for both import and export cargo as well as domestic cargo…

The business activities of the port are currently developing well; however, the proportion of import-export cargo is still relatively low compared to the investment scale and design capacity of the port. This is a challenge that we need to address in this phase.

VICT is one of the ports invested in modern equipment, with tremendous potential. Could you share the advantages of the port?

Indeed, to provide the best service to customers, VICT port has invested in specialized equipment, including 7 modern Quay Cranes (QC) with an average handling productivity of GMPH = 25 containers/hour; 10 Rubber-Tired Gantry Cranes (RTG) 5+1, capable of stacking up to 6 tiers high, and other specialized handling equipment. The port also offers night navigation for large vessels (LOA >195m), and flexible closing times tailored to specific vessel schedules.

Moreover, with a 30-year brand presence in the Vietnamese seaport market and over 25 years of operation handling more than 11.5 million TEUs (up to 2023), VICT port’s capability is highly regarded. It operates professionally, providing all seaport services, high handling productivity, and reasonable handling costs.

Additionally, VICT has established and continues to expand its network connecting to industrial zones, export processing zones, factories, etc., through inland waterway transportation with dry ports (ICDs) in Thu Duc City, Dong Nai, Binh Duong, as well as deep-water ports in Cai Mep-Thi Vai to facilitate cargo transfer for transcontinental shipping routes.

Customers can avoid traffic congestion when transporting goods via road through the South Saigon Boulevard towards the Mekong Delta and connecting directly to National Highway 1A, or via inland waterway from VICT to inland ports in the Southwest region.

With the port’s advantages, what services and logistics solutions does VICT currently offer to attract customers, especially import-export cargo, sir?

We are confident that with our professional cargo handling capacity, modern equipment, high-quality personnel, and systematic operational processes, coupled with our emphasis on digital transformation within the enterprise, VICT remains a reliable destination for foreign shipping lines to introduce additional mid-sized vessel routes suitable for our capacity, with a total payload of up to 40,000 DWT. Particularly, we focus on routes within Asia or transit routes through major transshipment ports such as Singapore, China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and others.

Furthermore, the full support from the Customs authorities in expediting cargo clearance through the VNACCS system and the implementation of the coordination regulations between port enterprises and relevant agencies have greatly facilitated businesses, freight forwarders, and logistics services.

In the upcoming period, how will VICT focus its investment direction to both increase operational capacity and meet the requirements of green port development?

In addition to the primary goal of maintaining and further developing the port’s business activities, VICT is gradually digitizing and upgrading its infrastructure/equipment towards green port development. We have successfully implemented several projects, such as the electronic port – ePort. This tool enables port enterprises and customers to conduct online logistics services quickly, reduce procedural time, eliminate some steps in the manual/documentary process, reduce waiting time for queueing, thus saving fuel for drivers, increasing container turnover for transport companies, providing online tracking of cargo delivery status, and monitoring the delivery history at the port.

Moreover, we are upgrading or improving some equipment currently using oil to electricity or solar energy, or partially transitioning to electricity to better control costs, save operational expenses, and minimize environmental emissions.

Furthermore, VICT is embarking on upcoming projects to upgrade the port management system (TOS) and supporting software such as Human Resources Management (HRS), Equipment Maintenance Management (CMMS), etc., to enhance the scientific planning of vessel/yard/shipment operations through gate or berth, improve communication between departments within the port to increase operational productivity at all stages, contributing to faster vessel turnaround and cargo handling for customers, as well as cost savings in operations.

With these feasible projects, we aim to increase profitability by reducing unnecessary costs, simultaneously reducing environmental emissions, adapting to climate change, flexibly utilizing energy, and implementing suitable information technology in line with the market’s new trends.

Alongside these service advantages and strategic location adjacent to Tan Thuan Export Processing Zone and only about 6 km from downtown Ho Chi Minh City, VICT port remains an ideal destination, a port of interest, a crucial link in the rapidly developing logistics service supply chain in Ho Chi Minh City, both presently and in the future.
